The Idea
I’m always looking for a new perspective on the ordinary. The spark of this idea came when I saw the word ‘pencil’ written in flourished, cursive handwriting. Because of the way it was written, I misread it as ‘Opencil,’ which led my brain to think: Opencil > open pencil > why would anyone open a pencil? > maybe to see what technology makes it work > who would want to open a pencil who doesn’t already know how they work? > aliens. For the story, I switched pencil for crayon — a crayon's solid colour feels more mysterious and worth investigating.
